DMIS: Tibet | Mine area landslide

Brief description of the situation

At least 83 workers including two tibetans were buried after a massive landslide hit the mine area around 6 a.m. on Friday (March 29) in Maizhokunggar County of Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. More than 2000 rescuers were deployed but no survivors or bodies have been found as of the reporting time (33 hours after the landslide). Police, firefighters and medical personnel are working at the site, which is at an altitude of 4,600 meters.

The Red Cross Society of China Tibet Branch participated in the coordination meeting held by local authorities right after the disaster. So far no response action is needed from the Red Cross.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs has activated level III emergency response and a work team comprised of Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Affairs and Ministry of Land and Resources, has arrived in the accident area for impact assessment and response guidance.
