DMIS: China – Earthquake : Death toll rising after M7.0 EQ in SW China

Brief description of the situation

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Lushan county of Ya’an city in south China’s Sichuan Province at 8:02 a.m.Beijing Time on Saturday, April 20, 2013.

More than 600 aftershocks have been reported with strongest one being a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that jolted the border areas between the counties of Lushan and Tianquan at about 11:34 a.m. About 120,000 people are currently waiting for settlement. More affected victims are under the hot weather and in urgent need of tents, drinking water, shelters, mobile power supply, ponchos, dry food, instant noodles and other supplies.

The hardest-hit areas are in the townships of Longmen, Baosheng and Taiping of Lushan County. It is also reported that Longxiang township and Shuangshi township in Lushan County (both are located in Northern part of the county center)are likely to be severely damaged. However, rescue teams are struggling to reach there as the roads are damaged.
